Herbicide Innovations Address Global Agricultural Challenges 02-11-2025

Summary: Herbicide innovation is thriving as multiple companies and institutions develop new products and technologies. Focus areas include addressing resistance, collaborative rice weed control efforts, and safe paraquat precursors, with approvals in the UK and solutions for Brazilian crop protection.

Nufarm's Scorch® EXT Herbicide Expands to Colorado for Resistant Weed Control

Recently, Nufarm Americas Inc. announced that its Scorch® EXT herbicide has obtained a 24(c) Special Local Needs registration in Colorado for the control of broadleaf weeds in fallow fields. This pre-mixed formulation, based on Nufarm's proprietary Duplosan® ingredient, is specifically designed to tackle resistant kochia weeds, particularly those resistant to glyphosate, dicamba, 2,4-D, and fluroxypyr. Scorch EXT, already approved in multiple states, now expands its reach to Colorado, offering effective control against various weeds and addressing significant regional resistance challenges in the agricultural sector.

Japanese and American Firms Collaborate on New Rice Herbicide Effeeda® to Tackle Herbicide-Resistant Weeds

Recently, Kumiai Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Japan) and Valent U.S.A. announced an exclusive partnership to jointly develop Effeeda®, a novel herbicide for rice cultivation in the United States. This collaboration aims to provide American rice farmers with an innovative solution to address the escalating issue of herbicide-resistant and difficult-to-control weeds.

Renmin University Discovers Safe and Effective Paraquat Precursor Compound

Recently, the research team led by Wang Yapei at the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences, Renmin University of China, introduced a biologically safe paraquat precursor called carboxymethyl viologen (CMV). CMV's zwitterionic structural characteristics reduce cellular uptake, thereby weakening its biological toxicity and demonstrating excellent safety in cellular and mouse models. Additionally, it undergoes decarboxylation under mild conditions to form methyl viologen (paraquat, MV), exhibiting satisfactory herbicidal efficacy in field trials.

Cordova's New Herbicides Containing Flurochloridone and Triclopyr Approved for UK Market

Recently, Cordova announced that its two new selective herbicides, ProClova® XL (flurochloridone + rimsulfuron) and ProGrass™ (flurochloridone + triclopyr + fluroxypyr-meptyl), have received approval from the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) of the UK pesticide regulatory body for use in turfgrass management.

Syngenta Launches New Rice Herbicide "Yiante" Containing Flurochloridone

Syngenta has introduced "Yiante," a new rice field herbicide combining pretilachlor with flurochloridone. "Yiante" can be flexibly used for both direct-seeding and transplanting within 5-10 days and is safe for rice. Early application provides sustained control of broadleaf and sedge weeds for up to 50 days, including prevention of barnyardgrass at the one-leaf one-heart stage, significantly reducing weed populations, subsequent herbicide costs, crop damage, and management risks, ultimately enhancing productivity and stability in rice production.

FMC Introduces Dichloroisopropoxyacetone-Based Crop Protection Products in Brazil

Recently, FMC showcased a series of innovative solutions at the DINETEC 2025 exhibition in Brazil, including the Azugro® herbicide. Azugro® utilizes the unique Isoflex® active ingredient dichloroisopropoxyacetone, specifically designed for cotton cultivation. It exhibits high selectivity, effectively increasing yields and controlling resistant weeds. This novel molecule aids in resistance management, enhances crop productivity, provides better control of invasive plants, extends residual effects, simplifies operational workflows, and maintains field cleanliness, mitigating competition from weeds in cotton fields.
